Our Responsibility

ig·no·rant

Pronunciation: \ˈig-n(ə-)rənt\

Function: adjective

a :lacking knowledge or comprehension of the thing specified b : resulting from or showing lack of knowledge or intelligence

There was a gal working a "makeup roadshow table" at Costco last week. She is from California. I had seen her working several days in a row and then she finally made a comment to me in passing. "Is it common that black kids become a part of white peoples homes here in Michigan? I must have seen 3 dozen black kids with white families since I've been here. People just don't do that in California?" One of the sample lady's was working her sample table right next to makeup lady and overheard her comment. Fortunately, she knows our adoption story and began educating makeup lady on my behalf as I had to scurry off and grab some eggs for a member waiting. Boy was I boiling...in fact I found myself so frustrated that I couldn't even look at makeup lady upon my return.

What was going on inside of me?

I have the feeling that was just a glimpse to the beginning of many ignorant comments to come. But it was good for me. As I was reminded, once again, that everyone does not have the same world view. Brian and I are at the place where God has us and we've had the privilege of experiencing the things we have, unlike many others. So, with grace, it is our responsibility to educate and respond with love. Not haste. I'm thankful for these experiences now before Ayantu is here as it helps me to process and prepare.

To more hard work...

Wow. I'm always surprised when I encounter really ignorant people than I am surprised that I am once again surprised by it. ;)

I try to give a lot of grace and just hope that others do the same for me when I need it. (which is often by the way.)
